Teaching Tips for Fitness Pilates – Be an Extraordinary Fitness Pilates Teacher
“Our body is the product of our thoughts. We’re beginning to understand in medical science the degree to which the nature of our thoughts and emotions actually determines the physical substance and structure and function in our bodies.”
– Dr. John Hagelin, Quantum Physicist and Public Policy Expert
Structuring Your Fitness Pilates Class
Instructing a Fitness Pilates class involves guiding your students through a comprehensive library of exercises and sequences. Each exercise should have progressions and adaptations to cater to the varied abilities within your class. Here’s a suggested class structure:
- Warm-Up and Joint Mobilisation:
- Begin with a gentle warm-up to increase blood flow and prepare the muscles and joints for the session. Include movements that mobilise the spine, hips, shoulders, and other key joints.
- Standing, Functional, and Travelling Sections:
- Incorporate standing exercises that promote balance, strength, and functional movement. Consider adding dynamic sequences that travel across the mat or space to challenge coordination and stability.
- Floor Work:
- Move into floor-based exercises, including supine, prone, side-lying, and quadruped positions. This segment should focus on core strength, flexibility, and controlled movements, ensuring participants maintain proper alignment and technique.
The Mind-Body Connection
Creating a relaxed and positive teaching atmosphere is crucial for engaging your students fully. Even when exercises are challenging, focus on the positive effects and sensations of each movement. Use affirmations to engage the mind:
- Positive Declarations: At the start of each class, invite your students to join you in a positive declaration, such as:
- “I am so happy and grateful now that my body is strong and flexible.”
- “I feel energised and healthy.”
- Banish Negative Thoughts: Encourage students to adopt a positive mindset. Replace “I can’t do this” with “I can do this exercise.” When conducting PAR-Q assessments with new members, ask them to share what they can do instead of focusing on limitations.
Enhancing Your Skills as a Fitness Pilates Instructor
Passing your initial Fitness Pilates training is just the beginning of your journey. To become a truly extraordinary instructor, continual learning and self-development are key.
- Develop a Thirst for Knowledge:
- Read Extensively: Immerse yourself in literature on Pilates, mind-body exercises, NLP, linguistics, self-development, and positive thinking. Aim to read 2 to 3 books per week, incorporating new drills and insights into your classes.
- Stay Informed: Share the latest brain research, back care statistics, or other motivational information with your class. Being a knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher will inspire your students.
- Be Open-Minded:
- Fitness Pilates encourages an open-minded approach to exercise and research. Explore new and old ideas, experiment with different exercises, and apply them to your classes. Continuous learning fosters growth and keeps your teaching fresh and engaging.
Setting Goals for Your Fitness Pilates Business
Whether you’re just starting or looking to expand, clear goal-setting is essential for success.
- Define Your Goals:
- Decide exactly what you want to achieve with your Fitness Pilates business. Write down specific goals, such as starting a community class, expanding your client base, or becoming a local expert in the field.
- Create a Plan:
- Branding and Marketing: Establish a clear brand for your class, including a logo, class name, and marketing materials. Consider using a sandwich board outside your venue and a weatherproof banner to attract attention.
- Social Media and Content Creation: Develop a comprehensive social media campaign. Engage with your audience on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Share clips of your teaching, write blogs, and create vlogs to position yourself as a go-to expert.
- Expand and Collaborate: Explore opportunities for Fitness Pilates Bootcamps or training other instructors to join your business. This could include writing articles, attending local events, or collaborating with other fitness professionals.
- Take Action:
- Break down your goals into actionable steps and create a timeline. Ensure you take daily actions, no matter how small, to move closer to your objectives. Consistency and persistence are key to building a successful and thriving Fitness Pilates community.

Your Fitness Pilates journey is a personal and professional adventure. Embrace the learning, the growth, and the joy of teaching. By continually developing your skills, staying positive, and setting clear goals, you can create an extraordinary experience for both yourself and your students.
