The Dos and Don’ts of Group Fitness Instructing
As a group fitness instructor, it’s important to create a safe and enjoyable environment for your clients.
Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when instructing a group fitness class:
Dos:
- Do introduce yourself: Greet your clients and introduce yourself at the start of the class. This will help to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
- Do create a workout plan: Plan your workout in advance, including warm-up, main workout, and cool-down. This will help to ensure that your class flows smoothly and is well-structured.
- Do demonstrate proper technique: Demonstrate proper technique for each exercise and provide modifications as needed. This will help to ensure that your clients are performing exercises correctly and safely.
- Do encourage and motivate: Provide words of encouragement and motivation throughout the class. This will help to keep your clients engaged and working hard.
- Do monitor your clients: Keep an eye on your clients throughout the class and provide feedback as needed. This will help to ensure that they are performing exercises correctly and safely.
- Do have fun: Group fitness classes should be enjoyable and fun for everyone involved. Smile, be positive, and create a fun and welcoming environment.
Dont’s:
- Don’t ignore injuries: If a client is injured, make sure to provide modifications or alternate exercises to ensure that they can participate safely.
- Don’t use negative language: Avoid using negative language or making negative comments about your clients. This can be demotivating and create a negative environment.
- Don’t neglect proper warm-up and cool-down: Warm-up and cool-down are important parts of any workout. Don’t neglect them or rush through them.
- Don’t forget to cue: Provide clear and concise cues for each exercise. This will help to ensure that your clients are performing exercises correctly and safely.
- Don’t over-correct: While it’s important to provide feedback, be careful not to over-correct or criticise your clients. This can be demotivating and create a negative environment.
It may seem simple but these are some basic steps we should all be following for a fun and enjoyable group fitness class!
