On Monday 23 April I ran my first Mums & Tots Fitness Pilates 4 week course.
I was a little apprehensive as this is totally out of my comfort zone as I have taught adults for 15 years but not young children. When I heard there was a certification for Mums & Tots Fitness Pilates I thought what a great idea as a lot of my clients are mums, grandmas, aunties etc and have said they struggle to get to a day class because of childcare so I decided to take the plunge and offer something different to Keep Fit with Paula.
I had 10 mums booked on the session and 11 children so my session was fully booked as this is the maximum number of adults I will take for any of my sessions. After introductions of the mums/tots we started with a warm up and from this moment I knew it was going to be difficult to get the toddlers to engage as all they wanted to do was run around. What I love about children is you do not know what to expect, how they are going to behave or react to what is happening around them. All the equipment we were going to use was set up by each mum, a resistance band, bender ball and beanbag, needless to say they did not stay where they were put. One toddler collected all the bands and wandered around with them in his hand. The bender balls and beanbags were used for throwing and football. I started the class with a warm up , followed by standing exercises and moved onto the floor to continue exercising then finished with a stretch. As the children became more settled some of them chose to join in. The babies were easier to manage and as you will see from the photos the mums were involving them with the exercises and they loved it. The interaction was great to see and the babies were smiling and of course the mums were getting a workout.
I enjoyed the session, yes it was challenging but the feedback from the mums was positive. Cameron who is 3 even went home and showed his dad the exercises he had been doing. One thing I will be doing on Monday is using my headset so I can be heard.
If you would like to join my next Mums & Tots Fitness Pilates 4 week course it starts on Monday 11 June – 2 July, Torkington Centre, Hazel Grove, SK7 4PY, 11.30 – 12.30 pm, £26.00 and needs to be booked in advance.
