I was up and on the train early yesterday heading for London to present the NOVA training for Virgin Active when I saw the NHS news.
Surely, surely not.
It’s 2014.
Surely the Chief Medical officer and advisors to the NHS can see the stats and that sending the overweight to global branded slimming club worth billions is just so not the answer?
With a 2% success rate how can the NHS justify this cost?
As the Government has practically endorsed said slimming club where on earth does that leave us Professionals?
Do we have even have a fighting chance now to convince the general public that eating packaged low fat manufactured foods, not doing exercises outdated methods endorsed by celebrities, Is NOT the way forward?
Heinz continues to manufacture packaged foods for Weight Watchers, which contributes £Billions annually to WW profits.
Yes, I appreciate it’s not going to be easy. But I LOVE the climb and I certainly love the challenge. Yesterday in between training and presenting NOVA I fired off press releases to MPS, Tweeted Jeremy Hunt, Wrote to as many media outlets as possible, Tweeted Journalists, contacted radio stations and generally banged my drum all over social media.
The feedback and support was massive. Local MPS have been in touch with myself and other KSFL Business Owners and I got so many private messages with emails off government contacts, people to talk to and work with, which is so exciting.
What do you think? Do you think this spells disaster for the fitness industry?
Do you think we stand a chance now the government and NHS has practically rubber-stamped these brands?
Talk to me on social media and watch this space! I’ve always fancied getting into politics!
9 Ways to be a Jaw Dropping Group X Instructor
I received a message on Facebook last week from an Instructor posing questions
about how could she could become a better Instructor, so here are my top tips 🙂
1: BE YOU
My number 1 tip: 100% is YOU be YOU. You can watch all the training videos,
go on all the courses, get inspired by amazing presenters, but my biggest
boldest tip is that you need to be you. Being confident and comfortable
in your own skin and bringing your unique personality to every class is THE
winning formula.
Of course, you can be inspired by other teachers and magpie some of their traits
in your teaching, but ultimately THE best teachers all over the world
are the ones who bring their special uniqueness to every class.
2: NEVER STOP LEARNING, READING & GROWING.
When I first started teaching I attended every single workshop, convention and conference I possibly could.
Although it can be costly, see it as an investment
in your self and your professional development.
WHATEVER the presentation is, go with
an open mind and open heart and I promise you will take something away.
These days you can access so much free training online via webinars, that every day
can be an opportunity to learn something new and apply it to your classes.
3: TEACH WHAT YOU LOVE
This is MASSIVE. Especially in this time of big global brands pushing forward into the industry. If you are aren’t sure about teaching something DON”T DO IT.
Be a detective and find out as much about a program as you can,
go to as many classes as possible
and decide. Does this really fit with who I am?
If you are taking on training and classes just for the money
without having any heart in it you will lose interest so fast
and your class members will pick up on it immediately and numbers will drop.
Only teach classes you are passionate about. It NEVER works out if you don’t.
4:RECOGNISE IT’S ONLY THE BEGINNING
However long you have been teaching,
if it’s a few months or a few decades, always remember fitness is STILL a new business.
It’s still a new career path with so much more to go at. This is what excites me so much;
there really is so much to go at so, every day can bring a new opportunity if you keep
your eyes open.
YOU can actually do anything with this amazing industry. You can create
a live business teaching and training people, you can create an online business serving
more and more people, you can create products and services that change people’s
lives!
WOW it s such a positive industry to be in. Keep your eyes and ears open and think
laterally. What do YOU want to create?
5: NETWORK NETWORK
Get to know EVERYONE that comes to your class. If you teach group X you will
be standing in front of the widest cross section of people from all walks
of lives and occupations. Someone in your class could potentially offer you
a contact or job you desperately want, or backing on a business venture, or become a lifelong friend, WHO KNOWS.
Make it your business to find out about the people in your class.
Take a genuine interest and you will make lifelong connections and friendships.
6: PRACTICE & REHEARSE
There is no doubt about it, you have to master your craft and put in those 1000’s
of hours of practice. Some classes you do will be amazing and some may have you running out of the door fighting back tears (we’ve all been there). We are not robots and no one can pull it out of the bag every single session. By walking into every class, prepared and rehearsed will always stand you in the best possible stead.
7: WE ARE HUMANS
Yes, not robots!
We have feelings and emotions. As soon as you get over the fact that
everyone won’t like you and your teaching style things will be easier.
If you can tell a participant isn’t digging your vibe don’t focus on that one person
and forget everyone else. Don’t take it personally and if they put in a negative
comment card about you accept the feedback and MOVE ON.
The worse thing you can do is dwell on negative feedback. Take it in, improve if it’s
something you need to work on but don’t let it ruin your life.
It’s only a class and it’s only one person, focus on the love and joy your bring to the majority!
8: YOUR MINDSET
This is HUGE!
How you feel about yourself. Your general self talk. Your confidence in your own skin.
You are a leader, a role model and being confident in your own skin is vital. Walking into any class with a smile, feeling positive and looking forward to serving, helping, teaching and sharing is the most amazing gift.
I still get tingles before a class. Whatever is going on in your personal life leaving any issues at the studio door and embracing the people in front of you is the best tonic.
Listen to positive audios on your way to class.
Set a daily affirmation.
Create a class affirmation and share it with your members.
You set the tone of the class with your energy, magnetism and vibrancy.
9: PROTECT YOUR ENERGY
Teaching lots of classes and training clients can be immensely draining on your own energy. We absorb our customers moods and emotions. Moaners and energy vampires can seriously damage your health. A tip I use from Gabrielle Bernstein is when I come into contact with energy vampires is I imagine zipping myself up in a gold parka (like the old skool ready brek adverts) Try not to engage in negative chit chat or get involved in class politics. I find being your authentic self you will attract to your classes the right customers and if you are not, look at what you are putting out there.
The clients you are attracting are often mirrors of yourself which may be a lesson for you to work on something or issues of your own.
Love being in Fitness. It’s an amazing industry!

The ‘Death’ of Facebook and Twitter? by Paul Mort
Don’t get it twisted, my friend…
Social media platforms are here to stay.
People love em, like to the point where I
think people are actually ‘addicted’
^^ ain’t no joke, dude.
But for fitness pro’s looking to get more
clients and increase profits..
change is coming.. In fact..
‘Tiz here right now..
Lemme splaineth:
As someone that runs his 2 businesses 100%
online I spent a lot of time and even more
money on figuring out and testing what works
and ‘what doesn’t’
When I say money, I mean I invest more money
into marketing every month that most people
in our earn.
No bragging (I do enough of that) just
presenting a fact.
It’s became VERY clear to me that if you
want to get a return on investment from
marketing on social media you either have to
A- Learn how to ‘pay to play’
B- Get people OFF social media and onto your
email list.
I’ll go a ‘lil deeper into both in a mo, bro
😉
Couple of weekends ago, I was lecturing at
the bodypower expo at birmingham NEC
A HUGE honour for me (and they’ve invited me
back, which is kinda rare- due to my
‘straight-talking’ nature)
Anyhoo, as usual.. I made some jaws drop.
Mainly due to 2 stats I presented
—————-
Stat number one
—————–
Only around 10% of the people who ‘like’ your
business/fan page actually see what you
post…
UNLESS you pay
and really, WHY would you pay for someone to
see a status update ESPECIALLY if you’ve paid
to get them to ‘like’ the page <<– that also
stupid by the way.
Re-read what wrote I wrote about 10% and you’ll
see why.
—————-
Stat number two
—————-
In a HUGE study done over 4 YEARS.. 72
MILLION customers shopping on 86 different
retailer sites.
Email kicked Facebook and Twitters BUTTS.
Took this from an article, case you can’t see the pic
“In examining the percentage of customers
acquired via different marketing channels
from 2009 to 2013, Custora found email
marketing went from attracting 0.88 percent
of BUYERS in 2009 to attracting 6.84 percent
in 2013.
Facebook, which drew less than 0.01 percent
of customers in 2009, now draws 0.17 percent
of customers — not even a quarter of what
email garnered five years ago. As for
Twitter, the microblogging platform draws
less than 0.01 percent of customers.”
^^INSANE numbers right? ^^^
Like..not even close
I talk about the benefits of email ALL of the
time such as on Rachels Podcast— here’s the
link to that:
Let me close with this.
You can either continue to waste a lot of
time and energy trying to
“Out-shout” above everyone else on there..
(that’s only gonna get worse as people add
more and more ‘friends’, ‘follows’ and
‘likes’ EVERY SINGLE DAY)
Keep trying not to get drowned out by all the
noise…
or you can make the change.
Up to you, my friend. I know which one I’d do
Paul ’email=money’ Mort
PS- Here’s a MATHS exercise that will make
you HATE me (even more)
One of the most UNCOMFORTABLE as a bizniz
owner you can ever do is analyse how much
time you spend on social media versus how
much income it brings you…..(we’re talking
‘free’ use of it here NOT ads)
I often hear “But I get clients from
Facebook” and thats fair enough. I probably
do too.
But spending 20 hours a week (that’s only 3
hours a day.. in reality we spend MORE) on
Facebook in return for ONE client (or LESS in
most peoples cases) isn’t really a good
return on investment is it?
{— Here goes—}
Your Income last month ÷ Time spent on Social
Media + time spent ‘working’= your ACTUAL
‘hourly rate of pay’.
Obesity…….BIG Business…!!
“Increase Pounds Whilst Reducing Pounds..!!”
By Andrew Crawford
“NHS currently spend £5.1billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses”
And it came to pass Andrew James Crawford’s predictions were right in the fact that Obesity is Big Business…!!!
“A fat lot of good that will do for us now”…I hear you shout…..”You shoulda told us back then..!!”
But weight …ooopps I mean wait…..
It was announced today in the main media that those with an overweight demeanour were going to be referred to a weight loss club for FREE…!!!
There was lots of heavy activity today amongst the Movers & Shakers on the social media platforms …!!!
You want a piece of the action …don’t you?? To fatten your bank accounts…!!
Reverse engineer the information coming from the media and package up your 12 week programmes ready to ‘Increase Pounds Whilst Reducing Pounds’….Obesity is Big Business…!!
So Andrew…..
What has Obesity got to do with the large area of Accountancy & a fat lot of good to do with Tax?
Well….It’s all to do with emerging markets and ‘Building a New Business’ from your environment whilst reacting to changes within that environment.
Business Development.
Today I sat down and thought about a number of new businesses that can be started just from the Obesity angle and the information shared today.
If I had the tenacity, energy and time the ‘Obesity/Diabetes Challenge’ would have been born today. SPECIFICALLY structured and moulded for the NHS to simply refer or to take on board.
Since….I am involved in other projects, I will just make you aware of it….if you ever wanted to pursue it yourself and have the spherical objects to forge forward with your ideas or plans.
Use the media as your marketing tool. Tomorrow no doubt it will be a topic on TV again and other forms of the media, talk shows and papers.
It’s HOT right now…….
The market is huge…. “As well as an estimated £5.1billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses, the NHS also spends £10 billion a year dealing with the complications of type 2 diabetes”
Redirect your focus to the NHS. Look to gain 1% of that market. It is BIG enough.
Things to look for:
Ability to grab a good part of the market share
Growth potential in the market
Customers demand for new products
If you are in the planning stage, I have a list of items to be considered when putting your Business Plan together.
The Business Plan Structure
http://www.fitnessindustryaccountants.com/articles/The-Business-Plan-Structure.pdf
If you wished to offer something along with your existing products or services, then I call this Diversification
Your can have:
Related Diversification
Backward integration
Forward integration
Horizontal integration
Eg. Existing Fitness Business
Buying into a weight loss club like KSFL – backward integration
Buying a KSFL Franchise – forward integration
Buying another Fitness Business – horizontal integration
Diversification can be achieved in two alternative ways
Internal development
Buying into new product markets
Simply keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to jump off the pages like this Obesity subject today.
Finally
Just as I suspected and wrote a few articles about the activities of Charities.
“…..Comic Relief has vowed to stop pumping money into ‘booze, bombs and fags‘ funds after an embarrassing probe into its investment polices….”
Following a report issued today, the charity pledged to be ‘more transparent’ with its cash – and stop buying shares in controversial tobacco, arms and alcohol companies.
Just be careful what Charity you support AND where the money you raise ACTUALLY goes….!!
According to Comic Relief’s accounts from 2007 to 2009, it placed millions in ‘blue-chip’ City funds that in turn invested in the firms, including £2.7million in three tobacco firms in 2009.
It is currently sitting on a £100million fund donated by the public despite promising to hand ‘every pound’ straight to good causes in its annual broadcasts…..How you feeling right now?????
Advice: Set up your own Charity.
Increase Pounds Whilst Reducing Pounds…..Obesity is Big Business.
